Canberra
Hey everybody.. back home again. The last stop of my Aussie travel was Canberra- the capital city of Australia. I just stopped there for a day. With a population of about 300,000 Canberra is not that big, but I thought I should have a look at it.
So, I just walked a bit around, visited the Old and the New Parliament and had a look at the "Aboriginal Tent Embassy".
What is the "Aboriginal Tent Embassy"? Yes, that's in fact what I asked myself as well. I never heart of it before, but when I was on the way to the Old Parliament directly in front of the Old Parliament House I noticed many tents, signs and a burning fire- I was standing right in front of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy. I didn't really know what exactly it is about, so I stopped there and spent a bit time with the Aboriginals listening to their story about their past and reasons for demonstrating for about more than 34 years against the Australian government.
The Aboriginal Tent Embassy was established in 1972, and although has been pulled down and rebuilt over the years is currently standing. The land on which the tents are situated was originally Aboriginal land with numerous artifacts being found on the site. The Aboriginal flag first received recognition at this point. Next to the Embassy there is a fire which has been burning for many years, which the Aboriginal Tent Embassy and people will not let go out.
The Tent Embassy calls on all Aboriginal Sovereign Nations to "stand up against the illegal occupation of our country and continue to resist the oppression of our people." It says that "until there is true justice for our people, these issues will not go away and we will continue to resist."
